Learn how Logistics Plus, a worldwide freight management and logistics solutions company, has become one of the nation’s fastest-growing private companies, operating out of its global headquarters and retail space in the historic Union Station.
As we start the New Year, at Logistics Plus we’d like to confirm that we are very proud of the communities in which we reside, which is why we actively work to improve our local neighborhoods and the lives of our fellow citizens. We do this, in large part, as a result of the loyalty and support of our great customers, partners, and employees. We are particularly proud of the work our CEO and founder, Jim Berlin, has done to improve and vitalize downtown Erie, Pennsylvania – home to our global headquarters.
Here are some of the community projects and charities that we continued to support in 2014:
Investments in downtown Erie, PA revitalization, including the continued revitalization of historic Union Station, the purchase of the historic Skinner Engine building a year ago, as well as murals and paintings in and around downtown Erie, PA welcoming visitors and encouraging further economic development.
Local internship program that has provided valuable experience to nearly a hundred local college students and created many unique, post-graduation career opportunities – including dozens of them here at Logistics Plus.
Annual contributions to United Way, with additional gift-giving by Logistics Plus employees through automatic payroll deductions.
Charitable support of the March of Dimes, including sponsorship of local fund-raising events.
Leading fund-raising efforts for the American Heart Association leading up to, and including its annual Heart Walk event.
Corporate sponsorship of the Walk MS: Erie event in support of The National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Support for the Barber National Institute and its pursuit to making dreams come true with community-based services for individuals with disabilities.
Annual support of Grady’s Decision charity, a non-profit organization that was created to present help families experiencing premature births as well as those families with children needing specialized medical attention.
Employees participate in a charity of the week prize raffles at our Global Headquarters every Friday, raising thousands of dollars for special local charities.
Numerous other local donations and support of memorial funds, fund-raising events, community gifts, and family help as identified by Logistics Plus friends and family.
Thank you again to our employees, partners, and customers for your support in 2014, and your continued support in 2015. We promise we’ll continue to give back when and where we can, just as we always have.

The Logistics Plus Belgium office was recently approached by Wärtsilä Oil & Gas Systems AS to help them ship an LNG pump on a skid from Qidong, China to the Navantia shipyard in El Ferrol, northwest Spain. Part of the challenge was that the skid was a whopping 11.8 meters long, 6.4 meters wide and 5.8 meters high, and it weighed close to 42 metric tons. Additionally, the earliest the skid would be available from the Chinese supplier was November 5th, and it absolutely had to deliver to its Spain destination by December 22nd.
To address this logistics dilemma, the Logistics Plus project cargo team, led by Frederik Geirnaert, designed and sourced a routing solution that included the following steps:
Securing space on a November 6th barge from Qidong to Shanghai, Yangshan
Overseeing the loading of the container vessel in Yangshan
Ocean shipping on the fast service to Zeebrugge, Belgium
Ground transport to the Zeebrugge terminal
Loading and shipping on a RORO vessel from Zeebrugge to El Ferrol
Barge shipping from El Ferrol to Navantia shipyard and arrive on December 22nd
This solution not only delivered the skid to Spain on time but also at a cost that was much less expensive than an inducement call to Navantia. To showcase this project cargo solution, Frederick edited and uploaded the following video to the Logistics Plus YouTube Channel. The video is only 46 seconds long to match the spirit of the 46-day move from China to Spain (so you might want to watch it more than once)!
