Trump Temporarily Lowers Tariffs for Most Countries, Raises Them for China

Trump temporarily lowers tariffs for most countries, raises them for China

On Wednesday, U.S. President Donald Trump said he would temporarily lower new tariffs on many countries. Trump’s announcement came less than 24 hours after steep new tariffs kicked in on imports from dozens of trading partners. Trump said he would also suspend targeted tariffs on other countries for 90 days to allow time for U.S. officials to negotiate with countries that have sought to reduce them. A 10% blanket duty on almost all U.S. imports will remain in place, the White House said. The announcement also does not appear to affect duties on auto, steel, and aluminum that are already in place.

In addition, President Trump announced that he would raise the tariff on Chinese imports to 125% from the 104% level that took effect at midnight, further escalating a high-stakes confrontation between the world’s two largest economies.

China to Impose 34% Retaliatory Tariffs

China to Impose 34% Retaliatory Tariffs

China announces 34% retaliatory tariff on all goods imported from the U.S.

China’s Finance Ministry announced that, starting on April 10, it will impose a 34% tariff on all goods imported from the U.S., following duties imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration earlier this week. “This practice of the U.S. is not in line with international trade rules, seriously undermines China’s legitimate rights and interests, and is a typical unilateral bullying practice,” the ministry said.

Separately, China’s Ministry of Commerce said it will add 11 American companies to its list of “unreliable entities,” essentially barring them from doing business in China or with Chinese companies. The ministry imposed a licensing system to restrict exports of seven rare earth elements that are mined and processed almost exclusively in China and are used in everything from electric cars to smart bombs.
