Logistics Plus Attends Intermodal South America Conference

Intermodal-SA-2016-Animated-GIFA couple of weeks ago, Logistics Plus representatives attended Intermodal South America. This year’s annual conference was held April 4-6 at the Transamerica Expo Center in São Paulo, Brazil, and featured more than 48,000 qualified professionals from the logistics, cargo transportation and foreign trade industries.

Latin America is one of the fastest growing regions for the logistics, cargo transportation and foreign trade industry worldwide. Brazil alone accounts for more than 350 billion dollars of the region logistics revenue and more than doubled its activities during the last decade. Some interesting facts about the Brazilian market:

  • Considered the 7th largest economy in the world, it should become the 5th by 2025, overtaking the GDPs of France and United Kingdom;
  • In 2012, Brazil attracted US$65.3 billion in foreign direct investment, representing 28% of total FDI in Latin America;
  • Annual spending power of Brazilian households is expected to reach $1.6 trillion by 2020;
  • The country will host the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, 2016

Representing Logistics Plus at this year’s conference were Francisco Tijerina, Nohora GonzalezJose Francisco Garza, and Gabriela Garza. The animated GIF image shown above showcases a few photographs taken by the LP staff at the event.

Freight Management Fundamentals Webinar

Freight Management Fundamentals Webinar

LP-MBA-PalletAs the company that manages the Logistics Program for the Manufacturer & Business Association (MBA), Logistics Plus recently kicked off a series of short webinars to introduce MBA members to various transportation and logistics topics and trends. The live webinars are complimentary for MBA members, but both MBA and non-MBA members can view the online, recorded versions after they have been completed. Each webinar will be around 20 minutes with Q&A at the end. The first webinar took place on April 14 and focused on “Freight Management Fundamentals.” A description and replay are included below.

In today’s lean workplace environment, it’s not uncommon for employees to be asked to wear “multiple hats.” If “freight shipping” is one of the hats you wear, this webinar is for you. Acting as an extension to your logistics department, Logistics Plus is providing a complimentary introductory webinar on freight management – a high cost item for many MBA members. In this session you’ll learn about:

  • Basic factors that impact freight shipping rates
  • Issues facing the freight management industry and their impact on you as the customer
  • Introduction to eShipPlus freight management tools

The next Logistics Plus live webinar, “Introduction to Incoterms® 2010” will take place on May 12. A description for the webinar is outlined below.  MBA members can register online to attend this live webinar. If you’re not a current MBA member and you’d like to learn more, visit them online at mbausa.org.

Incoterms® rules are standard trade definitions most commonly used in international sales contracts.  Devised and published by the International Chamber of Commerce, they are the heart of world trade.  Correct use of Incoterms® rules goes a long way in providing the legal certainty upon which mutual confidence between business partners must be based.  This workshop will provide an overview of the recent revisions to the Incoterms® 2010 rules, which went into effect worldwide on January 1, 2011. In this session you’ll learn:

  • An introduction and overview of the 11 Incoterms® 2010 rules.
  • Overview of risk and cost responsibilities, from the perspective of both buyer and seller.
  • Incorporating the seller’s cost responsibilities into the quotation to the buyer.
The Erie Lightway Project

The Erie Lightway Project

Just south of 14th Street in Erie, Pennsylvania, the Peach Street railroad underpass is a place of rusty shadows and urban decay displaying years of wear and deterioration in the heart of Erie’s vibrant cultural district. But it doesn’t have to be; it can be a public art asset to pedestrians and passersby alike that improves the city’s image, encourages development, and discourages crime. Upon refurbishing and repainting existing structural steel beams, columns, and the roof deck (and removing inefficient HID lighting) 74 LED fixtures will be installed, saving up to 70 percent in energy costs. This lighting system is estimated to cost around $60,000, and refurbishment around $110,000 for a total project cost of $170,000. No City of Erie tax dollars, however, will be used; the project will be funded with grants and donations from individuals, businesses, and philanthropic organizations.

The Problem
The Peach Street railroad underpass is:

  • Bridge-TodayUninviting
  • Dimly lit
  • Unsuitable as a gateway to Erie’s Downtown

The Solution

  • Clean, sand, and paint steel structure
  • Install multicolored LED lighting system
  • Display welcoming seasonally appropriate themes

Bridge-of-LightThe Result

  • Improve Image – Draw attention to Erie’s downtown entertainment district while welcoming visitors
  • Encourage Development – Connect business and entertainment district across the underpass
  • Discourage Crime – Improve safety of area through increased lighting levels
  • Reduce Operating Cost – Reduce electrical costs by up to 70 percent with LED lighting
  • Create Public Art – Create an “artistic solace” for citizens and visitors to enjoy
